Artist Statement
As an artist, I am drawn to the extraordinary inherent in the seemingly ordinary
; reflections, shadows, rain…. elements that shift between solid and amorphous,
positive and negative, natural and unnatural. I do feel compelled to show a bit
of context to lightly tether the subject matter to reality….to walk the line
between representational and abstraction.
I work in oil and strive for a translucent quality. I also embrace the different
stages of a piece; perhaps dragging the paint at the “sticky” phase , rubbing
back to an original underglaze, or using a subtractional method in wet paint on
dry. I probably remove and destroy as much as I apply and create.
The alchemy of the process is important to me. It becomes a sort of metaphor for
the subject matter portrayed.
